Elephant Eye

Phases

At the moment there are no elephants at EHEES yet, but we are ready to welcome three female elephants now we have completed Phase 1 of the sanctuary.

Our doors are always open to all zoological institutions, circuses and private owners who may wish to explore a new opportunity to retire their elephant(s) to sanctuary.

September 2020

The project, considered administratively atypical, faces many challenges. We are working every day behind the scenes to secure the arrival of the first elephants at EHEES. We do this in collaboration with governments, various organisations and sanctuaries around the world.

We also want to work with elephant owners, who are often reluctant to leave their elephants in sanctuaries. But it is together, with them, that we can achieve our goal. As a reminder, 24 out of 28 European countries have banned wild animals from circuses.

People ask us on a daily basis when the first elephants will arrive... We are as impatient as you are... Thanks to you, the volunteers, the professionals, we are now ready to welcome them

Many of you are already familiar with some of the many stories about potential elephant candidates for EHEES.

We would like to thank all those who believe in EHEES and understand that the arrival and reception of an elephant does not depend on us, nor is the decision-making process within our control

We are working on several applications for the placement of elephants and remain convinced of the importance of the undeniable need for sanctuaries for the pachyderms in Europe.

Elephant enclosure

Elephant Haven will build heated living quarters in which there are interior stables to night paddocks and outdoor areas. These stables will always be accessible to the elephants.

Different living quarters will be built. This way we can take into account that the Asian and African elephants can be kept separate. This also provides more opportunities for social rehabilitation.

The interior quarters consist of sand stables which are interconnected. The interior stables have the availability of nursing and training walls. There will be a corridor that can be used for introductions and provide extra interior space.

An elephant has at least 5 acres at his or her disposal. Here they can keep out of each other's sight, and the hills provide mobility stimulation.

Between the various outside areas we use steel pipe fences.
If necessary, this allows different groups of elephants to live separately from each other. By means of gates in the fences the areas can be opened, making it possible to create an even larger living space. Adjacent areas can also be used to introduce elephants each to another in a secure manner.
